About VTI

This ETF's primary objective is to replicate the performance of the CRSP US Total Market Index. It holds a broadly diversified equity portfolio, encompassing companies of all market capitalizations—large, medium, and small—and balanced across both growth and value investment approaches. Management follows a passive strategy, often employing an index-sampling technique, and the portfolio typically holds minimal cash, maintaining full investment in its assets. The fund's modest operating costs help ensure its net performance closely aligns with the index by minimizing tracking error. A significant portion (75%) of the fund's assets is subject to certain investment constraints. Specifically, it generally cannot acquire more than 10% of any single company's outstanding voting shares, nor can it hold more than 5% of its total assets in any one issuer's securities. However, these concentration limits may be exceeded if necessary to accurately reflect the composition of its benchmark index. Importantly, these restrictions do not apply to investments in U.S. government debt or securities issued by its agencies.

  • VTI has a broad holdings footprint, with 3480 positions in the latest imported dataset.
  • The largest disclosed position is NVDA at 6.42% of the portfolio.
  • The top three disclosed holdings make up 16.74% of the portfolio, and the top ten add up to 32.1%.
  • Sector labels are limited in the visible top holdings, so the biggest positions matter more than sector buckets here.
  • VTI currently appears in 64 active ETF comparison pages on this site.

What Stands Out About VTI

01

Portfolio Shape

The disclosed top holdings suggest a broad portfolio rather than a narrow single-theme sleeve. NVDA, AAPL, and MSFT are the largest visible positions, but the top three holdings add up to only 16.74% and the top ten to 32.1%. Sector labels are limited in the visible top holdings, so the concentration read is driven mainly by the largest names themselves.

02

What Kind Of Overlap To Expect

VTI is broad enough that it often overlaps with other core equity building blocks, especially large-cap and total-market funds. In practice, the overlap usually comes from the same mega-cap positions, including NVDA, AAPL, and MSFT, which is why broad-fund comparisons are some of the most useful pages on this site.

03

When Investors Compare It

On this site, investors often compare VTI with VOO, VXUS, and QQQ. Those matchups usually answer a simple question: does adding this fund create a different sleeve, or does it mostly duplicate exposure you already own? VTI currently connects to 64 live comparison pages.

Visible Sector Mix

Sector labels are limited in the visible top holdings for VTI, so the strongest signal here is still the size of the largest positions themselves.
